Colorado’s Response to the Avian Flu Outbreak

In recent months, Colorado has faced a significant challenge with the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu. This outbreak has had a considerable impact on both domestic and wild bird populations across the state.

Governor Jared Polis has been proactive in addressing this crisis. In response to the escalating situation, he declared a state of disaster emergency, enabling state agencies to coordinate efforts to mitigate the spread, manage the consequences, and recover from the outbreak. This declaration has activated the State Emergency Operations Center to provide increased support for response activities.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) has been at the forefront of managing this outbreak. Since the detection of HPAI in Colorado, the CDA has implemented several biosecurity measures to protect domestic bird populations. These measures include preventing interaction between domestic and wild birds, securing food and water supplies, and monitoring for signs of illness or death in poultry flocks.

One of the critical aspects of managing this outbreak is public awareness and reporting. Bird owners are encouraged to report any suspicious disease events to the State Veterinarian’s office and to avoid contact with wild birds to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. The CDA has also coordinated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and local public health agencies to ensure a comprehensive response.

In addition to affecting birds, there have been a few human cases linked to the outbreak. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has identified cases where individuals had direct contact with infected animals, emphasizing that the risk to the general public remains low. However, people who work closely with birds or poultry should take precautions, such as wearing protective equipment and monitoring their health.
