Measles Exposure in New Hampshire: Public Health Alert

A recent measles exposure in New Hampshire has prompted health officials to issue a warning to residents. An individual, who had been in contact with a measles-infected international traveler, visited several restaurants in Concord and Alton on July 6th and 7th, potentially exposing others to the highly contagious disease. The establishments include Texas Roadhouse in Concord and Baked and Brewed Cafe in Alton.

Health Advisory

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) advises anyone who visited these locations during the specified times to monitor for symptoms and check their vaccination status. Symptoms of measles typically begin with high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, followed by a rash. The disease is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing.

Historical Context and Current Concerns

Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000 thanks to widespread vaccination efforts. However, cases still occur, usually linked to international travel. Before the vaccine was introduced in 1963, measles caused significant morbidity and mortality.

Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination in preventing outbreaks. For those unsure of their vaccination status or seeking more information on the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, the CDC provides extensive resources and guidelines.
